While contemplating which tea to order at my favourite tea shop, I began to wonder about how we describe the taste of things and asked the owner how she would share what a certain tea tastes like, to which she replied, “If they asked for a Rooibos tea, for instance, I would say it pretty much tastes like, well, Rooibos!” I asked this question because what occurred to me is how we tend to use all kinds of descriptive words to describe things like how a tea tastes, such as ‘floral,’ ‘woody,’ ‘rich,’ ‘earthy,’ ‘smooth,’ ‘crisp’ and we can take on the subjective nature of these words as our truth in a way that removes the most accurate sensor of Truth that all of humanity has… the human body. Mindfulness – a Fascination of Mind over Body
Mental prowess and superiority are often praised as the pinnacle of the human experience and achievement. Mental intelligence is what often creates wealth, security, position and acknowledgement from others. The brain is often thought of as the most significant organ in the body, the director of the show, and it is to the brain that we often turn to resolve issues such as problem solving in everyday life, depression and mental health issues.
When we have stress, depression or anxiety we are offered ‘talking therapies’ that look at how the brain works and what we think about ourselves, and the world we live in. Continue reading “Mindfulness – a Fascination of Mind over Body”
Letter to My Body
Dear Body,
We have had 33 years together so far and I really just want to take the time to appreciate and thank you for everything you have done for me… despite my frustration with you in those times where you are not ‘complying’ with my wishes. I am really beginning to understand that you are helping me, getting my attention to let me know that the way I am living isn’t our natural way.
You have constantly communicated to me when things are not going so well and need to be looked at and have equally told me when I am on the right track. I must apologise for all the times I don’t listen to you when you are trying to get my attention: this must be hard work so I appreciate your patience and unwavering support. Communicating with Whole Body Intelligence
Our body shares so much with us and is so intelligent, but how do we make contact with its communication again? Why do we avoid all the signals that it sends, and how do we recognise or feel those signals?
Babies and little children are pure and honest and they show us clearly what their body communicates. Gradually this changes because she/he is imposed upon by the outside world: what can and what cannot be expressed, what is allowed, what is not allowed, how to behave, dress, etc.
Such outside influences made me uncertain when I was a little child and I didn’t know anymore who I was and what I felt. Of course my body sent me all kind of signals, but those were usually avoided, and not recognised. Continue reading “Communicating with Whole Body Intelligence”
Whole Body Intelligence – Choices Between the Body & Mind
Our bodies are talking the whole day to us; they tell us when to eat, what to eat, when to take a rest, when to go to bed, when to speak… but do we listen? Why do we ignore these messages? Continue reading “Whole Body Intelligence – Choices Between the Body & Mind”
Connecting to a Body more Intelligent than the Mind
I have found that connecting to my body is as simple as making a choice to stop and do so. I allow myself to become aware of my breath and then to breathe gently, allowing my breath to return to its own natural rhythm. I often find myself focussing on feeling my lungs as they move gently with my breath and then it is easy to feel when events of the day, such as driving my car or pressures at work, have affected this natural rhythm. From here I can start to become aware of other parts of my body – my shoulders, arms, feet, back and how they are feeling – deepening the connection with my body; it is in this connection that the intelligence of the body is revealed.
